Need more deets?

We get it. Some people just need a whole lot more information before investing any hard-earned P in their health and wellbeing.

For you lot, here's as many FAQs as we can think of...

Basic

  • When are you open?

    Tuesday 8.30pm-10pm

    Wednesday 10am-4pm (@UNTIL, Liverpool St)

    Thursday 8.30pm-10pm

    Saturday  12-4pm

For appointments outside the standard hours, contact us for availability.

  • How do I find you?

Our Bodykneads SPAC treatment room is in the Southwark Park Sports &  Athletics Centre.

You can find us at the Hawkstone Road entrance to Southwark Park, a short walk from Surrey Quays tube station.

Our Bodykneads LIV treatment room is in UNTIL, Bishops' Square.

You can find us in the north-west corner of Bishops' Square which is opposite Liverpool Street station and just before you hit Spitalfields market.

  • What should I wear?

This depends slightly on your treatment. Many clients feel most comfortable wearing sports shorts and we suggest you avoid sports bras if you're having massage. Areas not being worked on can be covered at all times.

Rub/Flex sessions are performed with your training kit on.

We can work through clothes for many treatments if necessary.

  • What will happen at my appointment?

Before your appointment you'll need to complete the patient questionnaire sent with your booking confirmation.

    • On the day we ask you to arrive 5mins before your appointment time.
    • Your first appointment will include an assessment with some movement tests.
    • You may have already had a video appointment, but we'll double-check your aims and goals for treatment and rehab.
    • If your treatment requires it we will leave the room for you to get changed and settled on the couch. You will keep underwear/shorts on.
    • Soft tissue therapy usually needs client feedback - so it tends to be a chattier session than a beauty treatment (less dim lights or soft music!)
    • After your treatment we will discuss an appropriate treatment plan and any follow-on exercises.

Money talk

  • How do I book?

We use Fresha for bookings and you can book directly here, or using the links on our Treatments page.

If you are a new client we may contact you for a video call first - to make sure we are able to treat you.

If you have any questions just WhatsApp us, DM on insta or drop us an email.

  • Do I have to pay a deposit?

No deposit is required, but Fresha will take your card details up front to hold the booking.

You can cancel or rearrange up to 24 hours before your appointment with no charge.

  • What type of payment methods do you accept?

We take all card payments, through your booking on Fresha.

  • What's your refund policy?

As a small business, please consider rebooking rather than cancelling. But we know life gets in the way and if necessary you can cancel with a full refund up to 24 hours before your appointment.

We still incur a number of costs if clients don't attend their appointments. If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment your card will be charged 30% of your treatment fee. No shows will be charged at 50%.

  • Got any discounts?

London City AC members qualify for 10% off most standard treatments.

We also run special promotions throughout the year - keep an eye on IG @thebodykneader

Vouchers or plans are the most cost-effective way of buying treatments.

Seeing as you made it this far, get 20% off your first treatment if you subscribe for future offers.

Deep

  • What is soft tissue therapy?

    Good question.

Soft tissue therapists (STT) work with muscles, tendons and ligaments so can help with pain and dysfunction in muscles and joints. We leave bones to chiropracters and archaeologists. We leave clinical diagnoses to physiotherapists and GPs, but often get clients referred to us following a diagnosis.

We are a very hands-on therapy and use massage as well as passive (we do the work) and active (you do the work) rehab techniques.

No technique or type of practitioner (physio, osteo, chiro, STT...) will work for every body and every issue. Soft tissue therapy is like detective work - we will come at the problem from all angles with you - and see what is most effective.

STT don't hesitate to refer clients on if they are unable to help or the issue requires clinical attention.

  • What's the difference between deep tissue and sports massage?

    Nothing really.

Massage is basically the same whether you're getting it as a beauty treatment or a sports remedy, and a therapist can just vary the pressure.

The key is how we treat the client - we ask for a lot of feedback, and will concentrate on areas we can feel need treating. We don't use routines but will adapt the session to how your body responds. It can be deep, slow and uncomfortable work, but it shouldn't leave you feeling too battered and bruised.

Sports massage is so named primarily as deep tissue massage can be particularly beneficial to athletes in the prevention and rehab of injury. But everyone can benefit from deep tissue massage, and athletes don't always need deep work!

So call it deep if you want to be fancy, or sports if you fancy yourself as an athlete. Whichever, I'll just do my thang.

  • What other techniques do you use?

Not intended as a science lesson, but if you're interested, we mix and blend with these depending on what we think is most appropriate:

Neuromuscular techniques - the owwy one.

Sometimes called trigger point therapy this aims to 'reset' your nervous system, which may be holding on to tension, by keeping firm, localised pressure on problematic areas until they relax.

Feels like someone is digging their elbow in you. Because they probably are.

Muscle energy techniques - the fun one.

We work with specific muscles and their opposing muscles to contract and relax them to open up joints and restricted tissues.

    Think 'Twister' without the mat.

Soft tissue release - the strong one.

Sometimes called pin and stretch, we create a pressure lock in your tissues and stretch the troublesome muscle away from it to bring a strong release.

A bit like when you used to wriggle away from your Mum.

Myofascia release - the super slow one.

Fascia is the tissue that surrounds all your muscles, bones and other soft tissue, and it can get stuck, making you feel stiff and inflexible. We maintain pressure for extended periods of time, warming up the tissues until that fascia glides smoothly again.

Feels like you might fall asleep and wake up 2inches taller.

Positional release - the comfy one.

For chronic conditions or those that are not responding to any other treatment we can manipulate joints and muscles into passive positions that release tension.

Imagine being a dead weight, but a very comfortable one.

  • What products do you use?

This can vary. We use Premax, Songbird, NAQI, Physique lotions and wax.

If you have any allergies please let us know in your consultation forms during booking.

  • Is your hair for real?

    The curls? Yep.

    The grey? Yep.
